I was invited by Windfall Films to film the 30th anniversary Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Torchlight Procession, & having filmed the first torchlight procession 30 years ago for the Scottish Tourist Board (now VisitScotland), I was keen to revisit what has now become a huge event. The December 2023 drone footage is part of an episode of Series 6 of Europe From Above, Nat Geo’s long running series for which I’ve filmed several stories in the past, & much of my preparation involved obtaining police permission to enter closed airspace with a DJI Mavic 3 Pro drone, for which detailed risk assessments were of course required, as well as personal firmware updates containing unlock codes etc. I was lucky with the weather on the night, & the shoot went really well.
